The village of Mastatal is one of the few pueblos left relatively unaltered by the influx of tourism in Costa Rica. Until just this year, telephone (and certainly internet) was a challenge to come by and required a trip to the city to find it.
Mastatal has seen some growth in recent years due largley in part to the declaration of a national park in Mastatal’s own backyard. Even with a few more visitors passing through each month, Mastatal’s population remains around 100, the culture is very family-focused, and nearly every family lives off their land.
Our farm is about 20 hectares and looks down onto Mastatal. Our land is divided into two main uses, farmland and rainforest. The farmland is used for cattle, horses, vegetables, sugar cane, pineapple, corn, etc. Some of our cows are not only used for milk, but provide us with homemade cheese as well.
